Placer County Youth Commission art piece on display at Auburn Library

A piece of artwork created by the Placer County Youth Commission to celebrate the county’s diversity will be on display at the Auburn Library, 350 Nevada St., through September.

The artwork is an 18-wooden-letter collage that spells the words “CELEBRATE DIVERSITY,” and is a collaboration between the youth commission and local organizations.

The subcommittee wanted to engage the community and reached out to local organizations to decorate the letters in a way that expressed what diversity meant to them. Nine organizations participated by decorating two letters apiece. The organizations included Bayside Church, Granite Bay High School Black Student Union, Latino Leadership Council, Placer Buddhist Church, Placer High School Feminist Club, Sacramento Jewish Academy, Sierra Native Alliance, Western Sierra Collegiate Academy Multicultural Club and the youth commission itself.

At the conclusion of the project in June, the youth commission presented “CELEBRATE DIVERSITY” to the Placer County Board of Supervisors with the request that they accept it as a community piece for display. The board unanimously agreed. 

“We were all excited to witness the positive community response to the final result of this project,” said Sophia Clavillo, co-chair of the equity and diversity subcommittee. “We feel very proud to be a part of this effort of bringing our community together to communicate this important message.”

“CELEBRATE DIVERSITY” will be displayed in additional county buildings before moving to its permanent home, tentatively planned for the new Placer County Health and Human Services building, still under construction.
