California gubernatorial recall election set for Sept. 14, candidate filing open July 9

The California Secretary of State this week formally certified a recall petition for California Governor Gavin Newsom, triggering a gubernatorial election Sept. 14.

If Gavin Newsom is recalled from the Office of Governor, the candidate with the majority of votes will succeed the governor and be elected to serve the remaining term.

Candidate filing for the recall election will open to California residents on July 9 and closes at 5 p.m. on July 16.

Candidates can file at the Placer County Elections Office at 2956 Richardson Drive in North Auburn during normal business hours, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. The Elections Office will be closed July 5 in observance of the Independence Day holiday.

Important dates:

  • July 9: Filing begins for the recall election
  • July 16: Last day for candidates to file for the recall election
  • Aug. 16: Vote-by-mail ballots will be mailed to registered voters in Placer County 
  • Sept. 7: Last day for the Elections Office to mail a requested vote-by-mail ballot

Voter registration forms may be picked up at all post offices, libraries and California Department of Motor Vehicles offices in Placer County, or completed online at https://www.sos.ca.gov.
